I have 2 chicks and getting 2 more, a rhode island, barred rock, buff Orpington, and a laced. The two I have are getting bigger, and getting lots of feathers now. I need to build a coop. I want a walk in run attached to the coop with a easy access to eggs, and to clean out coop. I live in the city and landlord might not agree so needs to be mobile... please share any and all ideas with materials needed as well ! Thank you ! I want it to look nice and still be very comfy and spacious for them, also my mom has a pitbull in the back, so need something good to keep her out in case she doesn't like them.. they are around 5wks I believe, cant attach pictures for some reason

Hi and

- great to have you onboard. I'd strongly suggest going to the Coop section and see if there is anything there that inspires you. In terms of space, the minimum recommendations are: 4 sq ft per bird inside the coop, 10 sq ft per bird in the run and 1 ft roosting space. There are so many options to choose from and i believe that some members have included designs and material requirements.

The Learning Centre is a great resource, even for experienced chicken keepers - loads of info on anything chicken. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center and there are resources there on coops.

After a few posts you should be able to upload pics - its done to try and dissuade spammers etc.

Good luck with your coop build.

All the best

Excellent - you guys being in the construction business sure makes things easier! I'm sure you'll have a palace built in no time!

Be sure to post photos!

Sounds like you are off to a good start with the coop build. Please watch the dog around the chickens. It's best to keep them separated as too often dogs like to "play" with the birds and the birds end up injured or dead.

Its my moms dog. She lets her out back but she usually stays inside. Cant really keep them separate so need ideas to keep her out. Thinking about electric fence around it. And im going to slowly introduce them to her and hopefully teach her not to mess with them. I can't wait to start posting pictures ! =)
