Hey all! I picked up my first set of chicks about 4 weeks ago and I’m watching them quickly grow. This is the list of breed (order of pictures):

-Salmon Faverolle
-Welsummer
-Buff Orpington

I believe they were about a week old when I purchased them, so they’re approximately 5 weeks old at this point. I’ve read a million threads about sexing and it’s inconsistencies with young chicks, and I’ve got my fingers crossed that they’re all pullets, but it would be fun to get everyone’s opinions! Here we go:

Salmon:

Welsummer:

Buff:

I was told the top chick is a Favorelle and I started to wonder if it’s a boy when some black started to pop up in the feathers. The wings seem to be very light, and I’ve read that some hatchery favorelles can have a messier coloring.

There are no roosters in Portland city limits, so we’ll see if everyone gets to hang around!

I'd guess the Favorelles is a cockerel. Hatchery pullets can and do show some black on occasion, but it looks like its got a bit of comb development happening too. The others look like pullets. Time will certainly tell!

That's kind of a strange picture of the comb. Here's a better one:

It's got some black in it's feathers, but it's not solid and I've seen quite a few pictures of hatchery Favorelle pullets with much more black.

Anything is possible, but at somewhere around 4 weeks old and the way that combs looking, I still think you have a cockerel.

:fl I'm wrong (its been known to happen :D ).
