A good chick brooder?

Great article. Just started being a new father to 8 pullets so i am by no means a seasoned pro. But the article was great!!

About 10 years ago I found Popular Science magazine had a website, www.popsci.com, that allowed searching its database of articles which included all back scanned magazines. During WWII there were many articles on raising one's own chickens and one article had a brooder sketch of a metal bucket with a lightbulb inside covered in sand. I don't recall if it was sitting on a metal sheet and had another on top. It was for outdoors and the chicks could get to a comfortably warm position. This was for hundreds of chicks at a time. Pop Sci has since changed its site and the search link is different. A quick search and I didn't see articles dating back before the mid-1990's but maybe one needs to search deeper. Lots of sharp devices like an automatic hatch opener that used pulleys, weights and morning light shining on scratch on a lever that triggered the hatch lift.

I am trying to find a good brooder. I have 9 chicks right now, but I gave 14 more in the incubator do I will need another brooder for the larger ones. I was thinking of using an old rabbit cage. It gave a lecture and should be large enough for the chicks when they are older. Then the new ones get put in the smaller one Any thoughts? Or something that would work and not expensive.

Nothing beats brooding right in your coop. It's not written in scripture you need a brooder box.

We just moved our first chicks to the coop today. I will likely never brood in the house again. The dust was much worse than we could have prepared for. It was a neat experience for us, as we are new to raising chickens, but from now on...in the coop! ;) I've already been making plans for how to incorporate the panic area for babies next year.

MY LITTLE BRATS HAVE HAD THERE BROODER IN THEIR COUP SINCE DAY 1. THEY LUV IT AND AS I PUT A LARGE WINDOW IN THE SIDE THEY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO STAY WARM, SEE ME COME OUT TO TAKE CARE OF THEM AND SEE THEIR SURROUNDINGS. WHEN THEY WERE 3 WEEKS OLD I OPENED THEIR DOOR TO THE REST OF THE COUP SO THEY COULD VENTURE OUT AND THEY WERE ALREADY ACCUSTOMED TO THEIR SURROUNDINGS. HAVE FUN WITH YOUR LITTLE FAMILY.

Thanks. I am really enjoying them. This is my first venture into hatching. I have 3 silkies with 4 more on the way and then Plymouth Rock. I also have 10 mixed breed in the incubator. I love when I see them hatch. It is so cool. Been around mammals all my life giving birth so his is completely different. I have a few people that have put in requests for my chicks.... So no shortage of them having homes......
