We picked up 10 bantam mix from TS six weeks ago. 1 was already a little bit feathered out when we got them. 9 are clearly silkie and the 1 who was larger already is clearly a mix. My daughter is VERY attached to this chicken and seems vise versa. Now, I am wondering A.) what is it if not a cross? nd B.) think male or female? It spas in play a lot, and it always puts is hackles up clearly but the tail seems questionable as the feathers are short and rounded. I also think we have at least 4 roo silkies, ugh. will be needing to find a few homes if that's the case! Thank you!

It's a silky mix, and I am not going to make a gender guess just yet. This is at least the third silky crossbred that I have seen posted recently. What did they all have in common? They all came from TSC.

I had a feeling it was a mix, we have had big girls in the past. 60 at one time once. We got these little guys for fun now that our daughter is old enough to care for and enjoy them with me. I wouldn't buy breeding stock from TSC. we usually buy from mcmurray as I trust them but we only wanted a few. So for our purposes it's fine. Thanks so much for your response. I keep hoping and thinking alpha female ;)

I agree with Sourland. Have been seeing a bunch of mixed breed chicks from the same place, alleged to be other breeds - but, not even coming close. Of course' their' chicks come from hatcheries - they are just middlemen and their employees know nothing about breeds or chickens in general.

Yup, that looks like a mixed breed. I also think it's a pullet but like the other members have pointed out, you can't be certain at this point.

Enjoy that cutie!
