One of our hens, I'm thinking one of the australorps, put out a gigantic egg today. I've never seen a chicken egg this large or this heavy. Is this a sign that one of my hens is ill? Is it normal to lay an egg of this size?

A couple of my commercial hens pop out belters like that now and again - I'd say its nothing to be alarmed about.

Probably double or maybe triple yolker...could also be a shelled egg within an egg.
Break 'er open and see what you've got!
How old is bird?

It's either my australorp that's over a year old or its one of the new ones who just started laying. Curious to crack the monster open!

When ours first started laying we got several large, double yolk eggs. I loved finding those and was sad to see them stop. We also have gotten several tiny, "fart eggs".

Thanks for all the support! Guess I'm making myself an omelette!
