Yes they can, it really depends on the individual dog. Make certian you supervise all contact until you are positive your dog will ot bother your birds. Mine never bother my birds, they completely ignore them
I've had my chicks out next to my hound on the warm days and she could care less. She has the least hunting drive of all of our dogs though she will just lay down and refuse to go if she thinks you want her to hunt lol. I can't image the other two will ever be able to be left near the chickens but that's life. just to be clear they are outside of her reach, so even if she tried to care she couldn't do much.
Edit:
My sister inlaws inlaws (lol) have 5 chickens that live daily with their 3 dogs in the yard and they have no issues, I'm so jealous of that
First teach him what the words Don't Touch mean. Once he fully understands that it means you don't get near something, then start with the chickens. Lol my dog had to walk through from chicken to chicken, and be told at each stop, don't touch. The dogs would look at the bird, then look back at me as if to say, what about this one? Before that they are kept on a short lead tied to your belt or waist, and corrected if they try to jump at a bird. Little chicks are warm fuzzies and very tempting to most any dog or cat. I wouldn't let him near them unless they are with a mama hen. Alone, they are just too tempting.
Yup. Even my older chicken dogs might just snatch a chick if she thinks she can get away with it. But she learned all about "clucky" hen's when she was a pup. She won't even look at them if they are with a broody hen. And it's my dogs job to protect the birds. One squawk, and they are there looking for the problem. But chicks...mmm chicken pops. Anyway, bottom line, your dog can be trained, and can become a real asset to you, but it takes time, and maybe a few cookies for a good job.
