love this site! it has turned off very cold here in the midwest- will cold weather slow up egg prodution even though your feeding properly
 
even here in the east it is getting colder and darker and I am getting 3 eggs a day from 10 girls

Howdy and welcome to BYC!
Actually it's not the cold that slows egg production, but the decrease in daylight hours.
Some people add light to their coop to keep production levels up, but there are good arguments against doing that. You can use the search feature here on BYC to research the issue. Keywords - adding light. That way if you do decide to add light at least you'll know the pros and cons.
 
We have not seen any decrease in our eggs at all but we also keep our "daylight lamp" on to help them get the light they need to keep laying. I do only keep it on from 4:30 to 6:30 pm and no longer.
 
Welcome to BYC. I'm a new egg too! I'm in the Ohio valley and my girls have stopped laying altogether in the last week. Three of the seven are at different stages in the molting process. After doing some research and talking with other forum members, I've decided to to hold off providing any artificial light until everyone has finished molting. I'll miss the eggs, but I believe it is better for my girls to let them do what is natural. However, if egg production is important to you, I think it would be fine to give them additional light. They need 14 hours of light a day for egg production. Good Luck!

Yeah, mine ( 6 hens ) only slowed a little bit. We haven't had bitter cold yet, but shortened daylight for sure like eveyone else. Went from 5-6 eggs per day to 3-5 per day.
 
I'm in Southern Texas and only the silkies are laying right now. One silky has four babies -- she "chicknapped" two from another silky; that silky griped for a day and then went blithley on her way. The other hens are moulting; so I'm only getting one or two eggs a day from about 24 chickens. I don't use artificial light and let nature guide the girls.
