Three of my hens have been broody, and they hatched their eggs between one and four weeks ago. There was one egg that vanished about a month ago and another egg we put out in the greenbelt after the chickens repeatedly kicked it out of the nestbox, and finally, the coop. That was about three weeks ago.
This morning, this chick was walking around alone. It doesn't look anything like any of my birds. No hens claimed it, and it wasn't calling for anyone. I know it hasn't been incubated by any of my birds. It's been in the low 70s to high 80s, but is that warm enough to incubate an egg? It's also been raining with some floods for the past two weeks.
Where could this chick have come from? It's possible a hen laid it somewhere else, but they're pretty consistent with the nestboxes. I know this egg was at the least never incubated at night.
