. Good afternoon. Our barred rocks will be 1 month old in two days. We bought them a couple of days old from the local feed store as pullets but as everyone knows sexing at hatching is not always accurate. I have read multiple post from this forum trying to figure out the sex of this particular chick. I am leaning toward male and my husband believes this one is a male also. If anyone would like to add their opinion, it would be great to hear your thoughts. Gratefully, Ashley.

Hi Ashley! If possible could you please get a picture of the head/comb? There is a thread under gender/breed that is titled 'not sure if you've got a pullet or cockerel' that many people post their pictures to. When you have new photos you may find that you receive more comments/opinions under that thread. Looking forward to your photos!

The barring does look male to me from what I have seen. It's very prominent and the stripes are very clean. There is also a lot of white. So yeah. I may be wrong, but that is what I have heard.

thank you for the reply and the suggestion of posting on the other thread. I am new here so your advice is very helpful. Sorry the photo is not of good quality but hopefully it will suffice for the purpose intended.

The comb looks rather large in the photo for such a young chick. Also, my 2 barred rocks are pullets and they did not have such distinctive white markings on the wings. For now I'm going to lean toward cockerel.

Thank you for your thoughts. I guess I will know sooner or later. I have always been scared of roosters due to a bad experience. I am hoping that if "it" is indeed a rooster that handling him often will help me get used to him and him to me.

I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience. I have always known the barred rock roosters and buff orpington roosters to be big babies. But that strictly comes from my personal experience and people I know. I'm sure all will go well for you! It's a gorgeous chick!
