I have a Muscovy hen that isn’t well. She is an older hen, but has been healthy up until now. She has been slow and seemed to have trouble breathing the last couple days. Now she defiantly has laboured breathing, gurgling, coughing or sneezing a little bit, small amount of fluid from nostrils and mouth. The right side of her chest looks enlarged. I know she obviously has an infection and fluid build up that can be caused by a number of issues but I cant find much info. This sounds stupid but… do ducks have crops that can get sour or impacted?? Or is the fluid on her lungs? Have you ever experienced this? Any idea what I can treat her with that doesn’t include a vet. Any insite would be appreciated!!

I'm sorry that you're going through this.

I've never dealt with any sort of infection or sour crop.

A warm swim may help her from being depressed. Seems like a good swim and preen always makes my hens feel happier.

Something warm and extra nourishing like plain scrambled eggs or plain cooked oatmeal may help her while she's under the weather.

Perhaps one of the more experienced duck keepers can recommend other supporting treatments.

She needs antibiotics for sure ,one of my ducks had kinda same problem andi took him to a vet , besides that keep her warm and feed her something nourishing

do you have any idea what type of antibiotics the vet gave? I don't think our feeds stores here sell anything so I guess I has to come from the vet.

I have brought her inside and started a fire to keep her warm.

Thank you
