Hello, my name is Taegen! For years I've been interested in getting chickens and now that dream is about to come true!

I'm based in Phoenix, AZ and would LOVE to hear from you guys in the area. Any tips on keeping chickens alive in this crazy heat would be very appreciated! Also mentioning your top favorite heat-hardy chickens would be quite helpful.

I'm looking into starting off with some silkies as I am not a big egg eater (I'm really into it for the pet keeping part

). I heard silkies are typically very friendly. Is it the same with silkie roos? I'd love to keep any roosters I might get, but I also want them to be nice enough to not attack me!

Welcome! If you join your State thread you will be able to answer most of those questions. Arizona tends to be a dry heat, so chickens will not suffer quite as badly as if you were super humid, but it will still be your major concern. But people from your State will be able to give you all the tips and tricks.

I have never kept Silkies but they do tend to be good momma's, broody and kid friendly. Lots of friendly breeds of chicken out there too...Buff Orpingtons and Black Australorps are my most favorite breed of chicken. Very hardy over all, they tolerate both heat and cold temps, they make wonderful lap sitters and are very docile and friendly. Great layers too.

Silkies are very popular but, I think they do better dealing with cold than real HEAT - Arizona style. You may want to ask on the silkie thread if others have a problem with them in very hot climates.
