First time chicken owner here. Just noticed nesting boxes have wooden slats on the bottom and my plan was to put lenolium on the bottom so its easier to clean. Nesting liners would go on top of lenolium, not using straw. So my question is.... are nesting boxes supposed to have some ventilation? We didnt build this coop, purchased it from Costco. Just wondering why they would use wooden slats for bottom part, space in between is maybe 1/4 inch. Thanks for your help.

I don't think they are supposed to have gaps in the slats in the bottom of your nesting box .... not sure what could crawl through a 1/4" though. It was probably made that way to keep the weight down and cost effective. I would cover it with a sheet of tin and then cover that with linoleum. Then, I would add some nesting material so the eggs don't roll and get broken. Once in a while our hens move their eggs around.
