**Heat Lamp in winter**

Just curious how many people use a heat lamp in winter, I have speckled sussex and I know they are pretty hardy, I live in Wisconsin so the winters can get pretty brutal -30 some days, do I need to get a heat lamp for them? Or should they be okay as long as they have a coop that keeps them out of the elements?

They should be fine as long as they are well ventilated and dry. At -30 you may need to worry about frost bit combs, but I have heard many in Alaska who never use heat. This might be a question best answered by people on your States thread

I live in MN, with temperatures similar to yours. I don't heat my coop, and my chickens do just fine. As OFW suggested, it's best if the coop is well ventilated. It's also helpful if you don't have large-combed chickens. Those tend to get frostbite more easily.
 
I live in northern Michigan and don't use a heat lamp either. My coop is insulated but well vented. If there's a storm with high wind and blowing snow, I'll cover the windward vents until the storm passes. Just to keep snow from blowing in the coop through the vents. If you have a run, I'd consider covering it for the winter. My spoiled chicks would never lower themselves to stepping on snow so I put heavy clear plastic over their run to give them someplace to stretch their legs and chase one another.
