Hi! I am new to raising chickens and have an 8wk old light brahma. Noticed yesterday that her crop was very full (compared to my other (3) 8 wk old pullets). This morning it was down to normal size, but within an hour it was huge again! I looked throughout the forums for more info on crop issues, but couldnt find anything like my situation. Like I said, chickens are very new to me and I wanted to see if any one has any helpful info or advice on detecting an impacted crop. My pullets did eat grass the other day, so am concerned it may be impacted.

I massaged her crop (it was firm, but pliable) this morning when I noticed it enlarged again and it went down within minutes! If it is impacted would it go down that fast?? she is pooping and energetic. I may be over thinking it, but better safe than sorry, I really love my little ladys and everyday is a new lesson for me :) I really appreciate any info.

Welcome to BYC.

It sounds like normal crop activity to me.
Some chickens crops seem to be more pronounced than others. If it was full when she went to bed and empty(back to normal) this morning it sounds like it is functioning properly.
When they eat the crop will expand and as they digest(process) their food it will go down.
Problems with a crop can occasionally arise, but providing fresh clean water, grit and nutritional poultry feed along with some treats you generally shouldn't have too many problems.

The following link explains how the crop works a little better than I can.
