My run is protected by 1/4 in gauge hardware cloth.  Any snake small enough to get through that would look like an earthworm to the big girls and would be taken care of right quick.  The pen that I have inside the run for the chicks is also protected with 1/4 in hardware cloth.  Outside the run, the hardware cloth runs down the sides, is folded out at the bottom, and extends out about 2 more feet.  It's anchored to the ground with landscape fabric staples and grass grows right up through it so we can mow right to the outer edges of the run, further helping eliminate hiding spots for critters.

I'm sorry you lost a chick like that!
