Hi guys,
Had a shock. I went to get 3 eggs from the shed for a cake, only to find they have embryos in!
They were all laid and collected on May 16 and were stored straight away in my shed.
Can anyone help and think of an explanation
Thanks
Ben.

For an embryo to develop they need to be incubated at a certain temperature so the eggs must have been sat on by a hen. How developed were the embryos? Could you post a pic?

I will crack one tomorrow and post a pic. They were about the size of 2 nail heads together. I will crack a few from different days and see results. I'm just overwhelmed as they were ready to sold as eating eggs!
Thank you for reading and replying

Here are some pics of embryo development ~

It maybe just the bullseye (Germinal disc) you are seeing ~

Do you have a cockerel with your hens?

Thanks for that. It looked like number 5 on the first pic. Yea I have Bruno! I do have a hen sitting on a nest and 3 weeks ago she scattered her first cluster but that was before 16th.
I'm at work tonight so I'll crack some tomorrow and take pics. Would it be possible that it's because my shed is hot. I know it's very unlikely haha

Temperatures above 80F can cause sporadic development at subnormal rates. ( http://chickscope.beckman.uiuc.edu/resources/egg_to_chick/procedures.html ) So I would check the temps of the shed. Is there any possible way that the eggs that were scattered before had gotten "hidden" and collected with the others on the 16th?

This was collected may 17th. Sorry it's a bad picture but it was broken inside when I cracked the shell.
All I can think of is that maybe she (sapphire) had kicked the offensive eggs from her nest and they had gotten mixed up with the fresh eggs. I've just seen Rita (another hen) sat right up close to sapphire as if she was laying, after she moved, the egg was no where to be seen so when she goes to eat, i will check and see if there is any undated (all the eggs in her best have the date they were laid written on) and remove them.
It's her first time being broody and I think she's just getting confused. If after the 21-23 days are up and there's no chicks, I'm going to try and break her as she's just going to sit until she gets results!
Thanks South to everyone that has commented. It means a lot. Just tell me if I start to ask too many questions. I just can't get enough of BYC
BTW the egg that was cracked yesterday was not like the above, it had a circle of blood and veins in the yolk

That looks like bacteria infection in the egg. The other one you are describing definitely is the beginning stage of development. The circle being the "blood island" that is formed on the yolk.
