Hi all,

Ive had chickens for a few years (got a lonely speckledy at the moment) but have not had chicks before. I've just got 2 four week old chicks, a blackrock and a blue ranger. Does anyone have any tips for taming them? They are currently very timid although starting to respond to our voices. They don't seem interested in any treats which would be my usual bet.

Any ideas anyone?

Food is almost always going to be the answer. Try getting a bag of dried mealworms or container of live ones - put a few out where they can sample them. They'll be hooked soon enough and you can work them towards hand feeding - they should eventually start caring less and less about your attempts to touch them or pick them up and more about the snack session...
 
An excellent way to tame chicks is to sit with them on the floor or ground and using meal worms, let them hop around on your lap as you feed them one at a time. It's a fun game. One will grab a worm and run squealing with it as the other give hot pursuit, returning to my lap to grab another worm, and off they run again. Good times!

I was doing this with my two day old chicks, and they bonded with me on that day, and now they come racing to me whenever I call them. They are four weeks old and they still are excited about running to hop into my lap for cuddles, and sometimes to just nap for a bit. I take the opportunity for a quick nap, too.

There's nothing more relaxing that sitting with four baby chicks asleep in your arms.
 
Thanks, I havnt really got anywhere enclosed enough that I can sit in and they can run around me but although they still run squawking when I try to pick them up they calm down a lot quicker if I sit down and hold them...I think we are getting there slowly.
