I have 2-3.5 week old chicks. I'm new but learning quickly. They have chick grit coming. I have them on starter. They have been outside a few times and ate dirt grass etc. what can I use to start to train them to come
To me and how? I have 8 babies. Still in brooder of course
Moving to elevated coop in 2-3 weeks. I live in Indiana it's pretty warm here in early July.

Small grains or cracked corn would work, as would fruits or vegetables. However, at this age, they may not know what treats are, and you should be very cautious when offering treats. At this age they should be almost exclusively on their starter ration, since proper nutrition is very important to proper growth. My recommendation would be to mostly work with them in the form of handling and holding them at this age, and wait until 8-10 weeks to start training them to come to you on command. They'll be just as trainable at that age but will be more receptive to treats and much better able to consume them as part of a healthy diet.

Thank you very much for the replies. Will wait until 8-10 weeks for treats beyond the little bit of grass they pick out for a few times a week

No need to wait. Meal worms are one of the best treats to train chicks to come to you. My chicks were getting them at two days old with no problem at all. They are four weeks old now and thriving.

Any treats are fine as long as it's in moderation and you provide grit.

So glad to have found this. I have 2 week old chicks and I want to give them treats so bad!

I just read some said don't use sink to refill water .... Uh ... I have. Why not? Oh no.

Meal worms, they definitely prefer live to dried. Also crickets, try dropping a few in the brooder lol. I did at 5 weeks it was chaos

Good. I do have a water softener. Was thinking maybe the extra salt.

Thank you. I'm a new
Momma and want to do right by them.
