feeding question for my Cornish Rock chickens

Okay...just curious about other broiler owners out there.

Do you constantly leave food for your Cornish chicken?
Or
do you feed on a timely schedule?

Right now...i have those gravity feed and my Cornish hens is not stopping.
They are constantly eating and eating
(VERY different from my Rhode island reds chicken, they stop when they are full)

Right now all my hens are about 15 to 17 lbs....
10th week now.

I pulled my feeder out and feed them every other day now
but they are still packing the weight.
after pulling...they just go around eating grass and other things i don't approve of such as roaches etc.

Just wondering with others are doing with their broiler chickens.

I raise mine with layer pullets, so I free feed. I do free range mine, though, and I don't feed the high protein broiler starter. Mine get an all in one feed that's around 19% protein.

I think this is the answer to your other post about keeping your birds clean. They're old enough to be butchered, they're actually way past due. Do you have a point to keeping them so long?
 
Well i figured that it was for meat so i am just waiting for all of them to get to 17 to 18lbs.
They all seem to gain the most weight after 6 weeks.

I'm not sure why people say the ideal to process is at 6 weeks?
I been calculating the FCR

1 week - 5.0 FCR
2nd week - 3.8 FCR
3rd week - 2.9 FCR
4th week - 2.6 FCR
5th week - 2.3 FCR
6th week - 2.0 FCR
7th week - 1.9 FCR
8th week - 1.88 FCR
9th week - 1.85 FCR
10th week - 1.77 FCR

beyond 10th week is about the same.
Shouldn't it be 10th weeks old for the ideal meat weight?

When I first started raising Cornish they ate 24/7 while under the light in the brooder cage. I figured when I put them in a pen with the regular chickens they would sleep all night while it was dark like the other chickens do. But no...even when it's pitch black dark they still get up, waddle around and go to the feeders & eat. Reminds me of a horde of zombie chickens wandering around at night.
But to answer your ? all my birds have food in the feeders 24/7.
 
Do you have pictures? Because right now, I am beyond baffled. I mean impressed, but baffled. I thought around 10 weeks a Cornish Rock Hen would weigh about 9.5-10.5 lbs max (ours weren't even to that at 9 weeks) and be very prone to sudden death at those weights, especially if you are free feeding and then skipping a day of food.

I precisely weighed all food for my Cornish Cross and fed 3 meals a day. I really don't understand why you would *skip* a day feeding them...skipping a whole day of food is unusual.
Grass and bugs are a GREAT and in my opinion, welcome addition to my cornish X diet. For one, it gets them up and moving, it improves their overall well being, is a great source of protein, and is free pest control for your yard.

Also, for our family we looked at feed conversion. Cornish Cross reach their max feed conversion at 6 weeks, we butchered at 8 & 9 weeks. Plus we wanted birds that would actually fit in a crock pot or frying pan!
