Hey all.
Was wondering if anyone would be able to help with identifying this lump? We have 5 chooks and over the last couple of weeks one of them has grown a massive lump on her foot that she now picks at

I am sorry your hen is suffering.

That looks like it is painful. It is far to large to deal with at home if it is bumble foot. I would seek a vet pronto if she is to live. Does she walk normally or is she limping?

I do NOT think it is a "crud ball" which would be mud and debris caked on and dried. It looks like infected tissue to me that may have started as bumble foot.

Crud balls usually form around the nails from what I have seen.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join us here! Goodness that is very large! Please do go to the emergencies section in the link left for you above. Here is an article that will help you too ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/leg-foot-and-toe-issues-in-poultry-of-all-ages

For me I would be looking at a vet to take a look at this with it being so large. It could contain some pretty big blood vessels and goodness knows what else. @TwoCrows what do you think? I'm not sure I would want to start treatment with out veterinary advice on something so large.

Wishing you the very best of luck with your hen :fl

Oh my...that looks to be a very serious infection, no doubt from bumblefoot in the pad. I personally would not attempt surgery as there is going to be way too much blood. I would get her on some PenG injections and get her to a vet as soon as possible. Even if the vet is not an avian specialist, the may still be able to do a surgery on this.

Good luck and I hope you can get her healed soon!
