Hey gang! So, my 2 hens have just started laying eggs. 1 started last week, the other this past week. I only have the two, and it's a small coop. Two nesting boxes with straw and golf ball in each, but both of them are laying in a corner of the pull out droppings tray (pine chips under their roost.) Will this change in time? How can I coax them to sit and lay in nesting box? ..or will they eventually go in there?
Thnx.

. Great to have you aboard. That is an interesting issue and one quite common on BYC. Most times it is with chickens that free range and are laying outside the coop and the advice usually given is to make the nest boxes attractive with comfy bedding and fake eggs - both of which are already doing. I'm not sure what advice I could give but into the BYC search box I typed in the words 'won't lay in nest box' and 'not laying in nest box' and tons of old threads came up. You might try doing some research that way. Or you might click on the Forum tab at the top of the BYC page and scroll down to the Chicken Behaviors and Egg Laying forum, open it up and post your question there. Hopefully with one of those two routes someone will have had the same issue and can give you some helpful advice. Best of luck to you!

Thank you. I will try those. A few people I know say that eventually the girls will figure it out...but it's just funny that they each lay an egg a mere 2inches from nesting box..haha
All they hafta do is just climb up an lay. Luckily I clean all the poop up in pine shavings each morning.
Then they lay around 1pm, and then 5pm or so....

Hi and welcome to BYC. Great search suggestions from Redsoxs. You could try to put them in the nest boxes, when they sit to lay in the alternative place. I had one that thought that an outside sink was a good place to lay - after 2-3 days of putting her in the coop in the nest boxes, she got the idea.

Good luck

My hens just started laying a few days ago and mine will not lay in their boxed either. They lay in random spots in their run and we have to "hunt" them out in the coop. A tad annoying to me by my 9 year old daughter loves it. She has an adventure every morning and evening. We have since collected 4 eggs

Thanks to all. I've had these girls for a little over a month. Got them from my brother in law. It's such a fun hobby. I wish I could get more..but I live in the city .
This site has a ton of info, I've learned so much and appreciate the time and knowledge that everybody posts about and shares.
