I'm new to raising quail but now have a covey of 25! Twelve Texas A&Ms plus Tuxedos and some mixed. SO excited. They ate like pigs a week ago when I got them but now their eating has slowed down. They are between 3-4 weeks (Tuxedos and mixed) and 5-6 weeks (A&Ms). I keep the two groups separated.

So.. I feed them out of the long feeders with multiple holes... do you all let them eat all the way down and empty the tray or do you keep it full? I've been keeping it full. I have them on 28% protein game bird feed right now.

I hope I'm doing all of this right. :)





 
Seems like you are off to a good start - but keep in mind you'll probably need to separate the sexes very soon. Coturnix quail at above ~6 weeks should be kept in small groups of a male and 4-7 females - if you keep several males and females in the same cage, you are very likely to see over breeding and fighting - to the point of death. Extra males can usually be kept together as long as there are no females around.
If you are uncertain as to how to sex them, search for 'vent sexing quail' or 'beer sexing quail' on here. The last one pretty much means you grab a beer and a chair and stare at your quail until one of them crows, lays an egg or breeds another - then you catch or mark that bird and keep watching. Neither method works before they become mature at around 6 weeks.

Question for you.. how often/do you clean out their sand box they dust/lie in?
 
I keep my feeders full for my young birds (up to 6 weeks). My breeders 1 to 5 or 1 to 6 get a cup (10ozs) a day about 1 1/2 ozs per bird. They very seldom eat it all. I also feed 28% game bird.

I don't have coturnix quail, so I can't tell you ^^ I have button quail and I keep those on sand, to some extent. I use a terrarium shovel to clean their cages - a cat litter shovel would work as well. It probably depends on the number of birds and the size of the dust bath, but I'd just look at it and decide whether it needs cleaning or not.
