i was looking for a hatchery to get some baby chicks but every one i come across either makes you get 25 chicks or charges you 50 bucks in shipping is there a happy median hatchery to buy from

i was wanting about 5 hens and a too but not be charged a arm and a leg for them any suggestions

The minimums are because the birds have a hard time surviving shipping.

I would just wait and buy what you want next spring from the feed store.

Also some hatcheries determine the minimum according to your zip code. It's been a while since I was looking, sorry I can't remember which one.

One more option, not my favorite... Craigslist. I saw someone giving away their flock because they lost most of it to skunks. But there are always chicks and chickens for sale at decent prices. Beware of scammers and know what a rooster looks like so you don't end up with a flock of those.
