Feeding Greens

My situation has changed to where I have to keep my chickens penned. It didn't take long for them to eliminate the grass so I have to start feeding greens. Are there any greens, grasses, etc. that is toxic to chickens. In my area you can't let cows on Johnson grass with frost on it. The Prusic acid causes bloat. The Johnson grass is now very green and will not take long to get enough for the pens.
 
You want to be careful when feeding any kind of grass. There's potential for it to get tangled when they eat it and cause impacted crop. Ideal greens would be things like lettuce, as leaves are easier for them to eat and can't cause crop issues. With that said, there's not really any grasses that are "toxic" for chickens.
 
If you add shavings and plants to the run to make deep bedding, as in mulch, the chickens will work it over for the bugs and worms they find, in addition to eating some of the green stuff. My girls did the same thing. This spring I am going to block off a portion of the run and plant a new area. When it gets taller I will open it up and let them have at it. Then on the other end I plan on doing the same thing. My run is not that big but a couple of feet will not hurt.
Another avenue to look into is your local super market. See if they would be willing to give you any old produce. Every week I am able to get different veggies and the girls love it.
