Best way to store your eggs?

Hi! Now that two our pullets have started laying last week I am beginning to think about storage. So far I have just collected the eggs in a little bowl, and I guess I could just use big bowls once they all get going, but I think some reusable egg containers might be more suitable in the long run. What do you use?

Hello there! Congratulations on first eggs! If you use your eggs quickly, bowls are not a bad idea, nor are egg skelters. I think the difference is, when you have a bowl, fresh eggs that come in usually go on top, then get used first, while the older ones get older and older. Egg skelters are designed so the oldest eggs are always used first. I keep mine in the fridge though, my fridge came with an egg bin that will hold up to 3 dozen eggs, so that is what I use. You can also have friends save their old egg cartons for you so you can use those to store your eggs. You can purchase egg bins like I have for fairly cheap. Just only put in about a dozen or a time, then empty it before you put in more so you do not end up with old eggs on the bottom.

Yes, I have found the fridge box to function well, and with the rate my family goes through eggs, we never have to worry about old ones.

I loved the look of the wire egg skelter, but frankly they are too expensive especially given the reviews they get, eggs falling through and breaking on the counter or not rolling down. They also sit on the counter which my husband hates. I started looking for alternatives and found lots of wooden options that were also ridiculously priced. Here is what I came up with:



This is a bamboo utility sorter that I got at Big Lots for $5. I put that non skid shelf liner on the bottom of the rows that runs up the front lip to prevent eggs from hitting the bamboo and cracking. I put block underneath it at the top to tilt it so the eggs roll down to the front. Across the top row I have 2 chalkboard tags that I wrote on "Add" and "Cook" and I move them as the rows fill up. This is made to fit in a drawer which was perfect for me, but it is pretty enough to leave out on the counter and if you need more storage space you could stack them. At only $5 each thats not a problem.

Using the tags Example: I add freshly collected eggs to the row with the "Add" tag, when that row is filled I move the tag one row to the right and fill that row. I pull eggs out to cook from the row with the "cook" tag and just like the "Add" tag I move it to the next row to the right as the rows empty out. When you get to the end you just move it back to the left side and start over. You can label the tags "oldest" and "newest" or whatever makes sense to you. My father-in-law says I am way too organized.

Obviously this will get over run with eggs quickly if you have a lot of chickens but it works good for my 7 hens. If I have eggs coming in faster than I can used them I keep a couple extra egg cartons around and add some to the fridge.



I find that the vintage cartons store nicer in my fridge and I added a nice label that I printed out myself just to make it look nicer in my fridge. Maybe I am too organized. I hope this is helpful.

Wonderful idea with the bamboo organizer! I use plain old cartons that I keep in my fridge and rotate. Your way is much more attractive!
