Help please with first hatch

Great thanks :) The new one is trying to bond with the other 2 and I think they are slowly coming round but right now he's sitting alone. Here they are, its amazing how fast they grow . . .

Awww!!! What's cuter than a duckling??

I'm also a little concerned they might be eating their pine shavings :/ I've only just noticed as spent a lot of time with them today making sure the new one bonds ok and doesn't get trampled. I use the large pine shavings, which our local farm store say is what they use for all their new ducklings. I've checked other threads on here and I'm hoping they are just foraging rather than eating it all. They are eating/drinking the food and water thats in there for them

I use the large flake pine shavings (with a layer of pine pellets underneath - it's amazing for absorbing moisture) and haven't had any problems with ducklings eating them to date. They do "nibble" at them, like everything else, but don't ingest them. I'd just watch and make sure you don't see it, if you suspect it. I imagine they can't taste that good compared to feed...

Thanks, i'll keep an eye on it. I assume my week old ones have been doing it the whole time and they seem fine. I've seen people say they lay paper towels down but they'd prob just eat that as well. And this duck thing was supposed to be easy!

I'm pretty sure they are eating the pine wood shavings. I've put their water thing on a tray but still the shavings are getting in the tray and then the water spills in the tray, so every time they drink they are drinking up bits of the shavings. I think I'll put a sheet down over the shavings for the next few days to keep them away from it. I've also watched and seen them eating the dry wood shavings as well. It's weird because they are eating the food? Any ideas? Is there another type bedding I should try that they won't eat? I wouldn't mind but I've read that eating the shavings can harm them

Thanks I'll see if I can get some. Failing that I'll just put a sheet down for the next week or so I think

Mine ate the puppy pad stuffing too

Its tough to tell if they are actually ingesting them. I think they also chew on them, then when they rinse, it gets in the water. Safest bet would be a sheet or something without any little strings that they can pull on. They are resourceful critters! lol But within a few more days, they won't be as curious about whatever the bedding is, and they won't likely mess with it.

love the pics!

Me again - I have a new problem now . . . this fella has been zipping for hours, about 5 hours roughly and my concern now is he's flipped the egg over so he's kind of upside down. I've attached 2 pics - so the part he's zipped is now on the bottom of the hatcher . . . is he going to be able to get out like this or should i help him out?
