LF Lakenvelder, Americauna, Leghorns, Olive Egger parents (MI, IN, OH, PA / Midwest)

Hey everyone! My first year as a chicken mom was an absolute success (even managed to get two roosters to love one another *proud*). This winter my project is to make plans to extend my chicken run and make my 20 acres of land more free-range friendly. BUT! Most EXCITING is figuring out what my new chickens will be in Spring, and where they will come from in the Spring!

I'm really not looking for a hardcore "hatchery". I'd really like my chickens to come from low-output chicken moms and dads who have beautiful happy chickens, and I'd like to drive out and pick them up personally. So I'm hoping I can find some local chicken parents in the midwest who might be willing to hatch some extra eggs for me next Spring! I'm starting my search a bit early so I can be prepared, and have all of my hens in a row when the time comes.

I am looking for Lakenvelders, Americaunas, Leghorns, and Olive Eggers. (Not sure how many I want, and I don't mind unsexed chicks, just please don't sex them behind my back and give me all roos, ya scoundrel!)



The Quick-Bullets on what I'm looking for:

• Looking for chicken parents in the Midwest who wouldn't mind hatching a few extra eggs for me this coming spring! I DO NOT WANT high-output hatcheries.
• LAKENVELDERs, AMERICAUNAs, LEGHORNs and OLIVE EGGERS. I would also like you to speak up if you have French Copper Marans that lay them beautiful dark chocolate eggs. I LOVE EGGS! If you have cool eggs, let me know!!!
• I am willing to drive up to 6 hours from Detroit in any direction. I want to pick them up myself to prevent death and sadness. Please be okay with me coming to get the birds, I am not interested in mailed birds.
• I am fine with unsexed chicks.
• I can trade chicks or pay with cash!

If you fit this description, would you mind sending some pics of your ladies? Send pics of their eggs too! I'd love to be able to mingle a bit and adopt some great BYC chicks this coming year. Also give me a number in $$ you would charge per chick. Also be sure to let me know if you are capable of sexing chicks! Because of course I'd rather have pullets.

If you are interested in trade chicks, I'll be hatching a small amount of hybrids that could be Americauna, Orpington, Maran, Barred Rock mixes.

There is a place in Vestaberg, MI (just south of Mt. Pleasant MI that deals in three types of chickens (Barnevelder, Ameraucana, and Cuckoo marans). I just bought six from them but I am not sure if they will allow you to pick them up. A lot of places do not want people coming and going due to disease, maybe their conditions, it's a family business and not set up for outside visitors, no shows, etc. the person I dealt with here was very responsive, let me buy as many or little as I wanted (bigger places minimum was 12 or more). I did have them shipped and they arrived in a day, so they were boxed for less than 24 hours (more like 18 hrs.) I was given a tracking number and she contacted me to make sure they all arrived safely.

I also heard of a place south of grand rapids but they are a bigger business and will NOT let anyone on site. I believe their website stated this was because they did not want anything exposed to potential diseases.

Hey there,

No offense, but I did specifically mention I wasn't looking for high-yield hatcheries. I obtained my entire flock from boxes hatched by individuals--- this is now how I prefer my chickens, which is why I am so okay with driving so out of the way to get them. I think it's pretty clear what I'm looking for in my post... I buy my chickens from a box because I enjoy supporting people who want to hatch their own eggs but don't necessarily have the space to have more chickens (especially dealing with unsexed chicks). Home hatched chicks also seem to have a higher rate of imprinting to a human face--- I like this.

If someone wants to meet me at a grocery store so I don't bring "germs" onto their lawn, I'm okay with that.

Are you happy with your chicks you received? I'm looking to add some and he has what I need. Did you get straight run?

We are pleased with the chickens we received. We asked for all pullets and so far I believe we do. After some research we did tiny out that the barnevelder variety are very hard to sex when they are young. We will see in a few more weeks what we really have. We obtained all three breeds all healthy and growing very fast. We did select 4 week old chicks to help with getting them feathered before the winter cold set in.
