In-Coop Brooders

I'm expecting a shipment of chicks to be delivered on Thursday and I'm planning on brooding them in my new coop using the heating pad method.

I'm in Oregon and I'd like to see how others have set up their heating pad brooders, whether they're in coop or not. This will be my second brood of babies and my first using the heating pad method and brooding them outside rather than in my house or garage.

I ordered 9 but I'm expecting some extras as "packing peanuts" so I was wondering how big I should make my brooder. Would 4'x3' be big enough for them?

I set my HP brooder inside a haybale brooder with a topper of some kind when it's cold temps outside. The haybales block the wind and are easily moved when I want to adjust the size of the brooder or open it a little to let the chicks integrate but still have a place to which they can retreat. I just stretch netting over it so the big birds can't get into the brooder and eat their feed.

Hey from down I-5

Mine was set up in the unheated barn. No power to the coop. I used the same galvanized steel trough I've always used with a heat lamp.

So, that shows the pad, with the little extra curl on the side. The chicks loved to hunker down there during the day and stay toasty warm.

Got the brooder all set up just need to add water, feed and some babies! My littles shipped out today so hopefully they'll be here by Friday. I'm so excited.
