I have 8 laying hens and two older ones about 3 years old. The 8 were all chicks raised up. I see that 8 of the 10 have no feathers on their butts. One older one and one younger one still have their feathers. I watched them for a few hours the other day and could not find anyone pecking the feathers. I checked for mites and found none. What could be causing the feather loss on their butts. Feather loss is about a baseball size around their vent.

I am feeding a 16% protein layer crumble, and scratch grain. No other supplements.

When that happened to me it was mites and lice but i could see them, look very very carefull at all of the birds skin not just around butt and make sure theres no little bugs or nits, nits look like small white mass at base of the feather.

If you do find evidence of lice or mites the best treatment is premithin 10 you get it from a feed store i use gordons and follow the instructions on the back, you just dilute it with water and spray the birds, youd have to treat all of them and clean out their coop, spraying the walls and everything else with the spray solution as well i even sprinkle some sevin on the floor and in nesting boxes- without birds in coop because it can harm them and then re-bed.

I took it upon myself to do a quick search online if you dont have mice or lice it could possibly be one of these

1.molting
2.vent gleet
3.vent-worms
4.egg bound
5.pecking by self or others

If i was you id start from the top and work my way down the list reaserching all of them and what to look for since some can be life threatening. Hth

Did you google vent glee and vent worms? If you still didnt see any lice or mites or nits its probably something eles, id hate for it to be vent worms and for them to end up dying or something
