I have recently gotten two new silkie hens. Shortly after getting them home, I began inspecting them. All looked good except for bugs that I saw crawling on their skin. After doing a little bit of research, I found that the bugs were chicken body lice. I have had chickens for four years and never had this problem. Now, two weeks after getting them, one of the silkies is broody. I was wondering if anybody had any idea of what I could do to get rid of these bugs for good before introducing them to my other silkies without harming the eggs under the broody hen. I have put a tub of sand in the coop and some on the ground. Any help at all would be appreciated.

I would pull out the big guns right off the bat, the sand to dust bathe isn't going to get rid of an lice infestation......poultry dust with permethrin will take care of them pretty easily.

Thanks. I will dry to get some of the permethrin dust or spray, whichever I can find.

Good point. The only thing that I am worried about is the broody hen and her chicks who are yet to hatch. The lice are not that bad, but when I got them, they were covered and were missing many of their feathers. Now, however, I may see 1-2 on the broody hen and 4-5 on the other. Their feathers are coming in nicely now though

Permethrin dust will treat them.

I have been looking around for permethrin dust, but I have not found any. What I am thinking about doing is using Sevin dust as it is easy to find here. My chickens just have a few lice, and I have not seen any signs of mites, so do y'all think that sevin dust would be a good alternative?
