And so comes another newby

Thank you all for the welcome.

I came home tonight after an all dayer. Checked on fowl and there where 5 eggs

what was interesting to me is that the 5th egg I pick up(carefully) due to the egg didn't have a hard shell like all the others before. There was only a firm clear membrane around it.
Any thoughts why this would happen?

Hey Ron

If your gals are still new to laying, small and soft shelled eggs can be the norm while they get their internal plumbing into order.

In older birds, soft shelled eggs can occur leading up to or during a moult and chickens can lay soft shells towards the end of their egg laying days.

However, in hens that are experienced layers and not yet ready to be put out to pasture, soft shells can be a sign of calcium deficiency.

Do you have oyster shell available for the girls to peck at should they need it? If you have some separate from their food [I put mine in the coop], they will peck at it when they feel they need more calcium.

Ah, OK, if she is a youngster and new to laying, she should be OK.

Soft shells are only a concern if you are seeing them frequently from the same girl.

I would just try and keep an eye on her but I know it is difficult sometimes to know who is actually doing the laying.

Is your veggie rod hanging vertical or horizontal? I'd like to see a pic. I need to do something like that.

RGFarmers started with eighteen chickens and now down to 11. I've put away 4, not sure about the other 3 missing ones. 3 of the 4 I've found dead, 3 outside the coop/pen, 1 inside the coop. Is this kind of death rate common in the chicken life?
