Hi All! Typical long time lurker, first time poster. I've had trouble researching my particular issue, so I figured it's finally time to create an account and post here.

I have a small flock of chickens, one of which has a moderate case of cross-beak (aka "scissor beak"). I've attempted to use bottom-mounted nipples in the past, but I've always run into problems with leaks. I'm now considering giving nipples another go and am investigating using the side-mounted variety, however I'm slightly concerned my poor scissor-faced friend will end up in trouble trying to sufficiently water herself.

Does anyone here have any experience using SIDE-MOUNTED poultry nipples with a cross-beaked chicken? The nipples are a bit expensive and our adorable little misfit is very dear to us, so I'm hesitant to make this purchase without knowing someone out there has had success with this combination. Any input is appreciated and pictures can be provided if necessary! Thanks in advance!!

I'm not sure your cross-beaked chicken could use horizontal nipples. Hopefully someone has some experience with this issue.

I use horizontal nipples. The birds put their bottom beak on a kind of mini shelf that fits it perfectly. As they do that they push with the tip of their beak and the water seems to just go right onto the bottom beak. For a cross-beaked bird this would be difficult. Also would your bird be able to push on the pin. There is a spring inside there so it's harder to push than a vertical nipple.

I guess it all depends on how cross-beaked the bird is. I'm thinking it "might" be possible if the cross in minimal. There are state threads in the forums. Type the name of your state and you'll find them. Maybe someone lives close enough for you to see the nipples and figure out if they might work. Good luck and welcome to BYC.
