Hen protecting other adult hens like a chick

Will adult hens protect other adults like they would their own chicks or am I reading the behavior wrong ...?

This afternoon 2 hens hung out in the coop while I was cleaning & when I brought in the new pine shaving (they hate the bag) Luna (6 y/o Australorp) seemed to gather & hide our Barred Rock, Petra (3 y/o) under her - as best as she could of course - Petra's fluffy butt could not completely fit under Luna. Wish I had my camera to get a shot of Petra peeking her head out...

Birds scared to point of panicking. They typically hide in heavy brush hen so frightened but under each other only option you provided. In larger commercial operations such can lead to crushing deaths.
