I have a small coop with 2 hens & one rooster. One of my hens, Lucy, is laying on 2 eggs. They all live in the same coop & all sleep in the laying area at night. I think that only one of the eggs might hatch because the roo and one of the hens are Bantem and Lucy is a larger hen. ( I don't think that the rooster can or has been able to get to her). Right now she is laying on her nest in the corner of their sleeping quarters. When & if one or both eggs hatch should I seperate them or leave Lucy & babies with the others?

glad you joined us . I allow my hens to stay with the flock . A good broody hen will protect the chicks . You may have a problem if the coop is really small . Flock Master 64 gave you good advice . Make sure the chick can't go into the main pen without the hen to protect it good luck with your hatch

Well, they both quit laying on the eggs a couple of days after I made the post. I left the eggs for a couple of days to see if one of the hens would go back to them. They didn't. Out of curiosity I cracked the eggs & found 2 of the 3 eggs did indeed have chicks inside. How could I have saved the eggs & let them hatch? I am wondering in case it happens again. Also, will the hen that laid the 2 fertal eggs always lay fertal eggs? I really want to hatch some chicks.

Well, Lucy is laying on 5 eggs now. Two are hers and three are from my other hen Charlotte. I had a friend candle them & there are chicks in all 5! They should hatch 4/29/17 or so. I separated Lucy and the eggs to another pen when Charlotte started trying to fight Lucy to lay on them. Charlotte showed no interest in laying on them at first and Lucy has always gone broody even if there were no eggs under her. To my surprise, Charlotte laid 1 egg in her nest shortly after that and has been laying on it. It is due to hatch 5/5/17. I have not candled it, but am assuming that since her others were fertil that this one is too. Here's to hoping I have some chicks by this weekend.

UPDATE: 2 of Lucy's 5 eggs hatched this morning. They are so cute & Lucy is being a great Mom keeping them nice & warm! 3 more still under her and 1 still under my other hen, Charlotte.
