Finches kicking eggs out of nest

My finch hen laid 4 eggs and started sitting on Thursday. When I went to change the paper at the bottom of the cage on Saturday I noticed one egg that was cracked and dried so prob been there overnight. Then late Saturday night they threw 2 more out although there was yolk in the nest so it probably broke in there first. One of these eggs had some development in it. The final one they left in the nest but abandoned it Sunday morning I removed it in the evening as it had been left too long and this one had development in it.

I have never seen or touched finch eggs before and they were very fragile so I don't know if they accidentally broke them and then threw them out.

Any ideas why this may have happened and when can I expect them to try again?

sorry my response was so short but I was on a mobile plus I couldn't have written it better that the link posted. I know its frustrating but it wont take long before they try again and hopefully they will do better this time

That's ok it was a great link and thank you for taking the time to respond

I didn't read the link G gave you, but he's got pretty good info ;)

But really I'd like more information from you. Do you have multiple pairs of finches in the same cage?
What I've seen happen is that if a nest is being used other finch pairs say "well that's a good safe spot for ME to nest too" and they proceed to toss out chicks or eggs.

What type of finches do you have?
Some finches are more shy than others. If you bother them too much or they are in a high traffic area they may decide it's not a safe nesting spot after all and proceed to destroy their own eggs rather than put the effort into sitting and rearing chicks in a dangerous situation. You can combat that by putting in some fake greenery around their nest, not checking into it too closely and moving them to a less trafficked area of your home :)

There is only one pair in the cage, they are zebra finches. We have them in our lounge so maybe the noise in here is too much. There is no where else for us to put them.

Thank you for your help
