Just starting

I have our Coop up and ready. The bottom is open, so no floor.. My husband wanted to use nature's floor. But I heard that wasn't a good idea. Can I put a layers of pine shavings on the ground and some hay on top of that? Nesting box.. same way? Oh yea I also sprinkled DE on the ground first and in the nesting box bottom first.

IMO the only way to go is having the natural ground as the floor----best way, easiest.
Throw some raked up leaves in it and the chickens will compost it all for you.

What are you trying to accomplish by spreading the DE?
I'm curious.

Search for deep littler method.

(give me a few mins. to find a good article about it..Ill come back and post it for you)

I would recommend covering the open floor with some sort of bedding to make it easier to clean up...birds poo all night long as they're roosting. Another reason to put a bottom on the coop would be to help prevent digging predators from tunneling up into the coop. If you put down an "apron" of hardware cloth along the perimeter of the coop, that should help prevent the digging into the coop.

Hope that helps answer your question. Thanks for joining us!

I was told to help prevent mites and bugs to sprinkle it in the nesting box and coop. Also to use in dust bath..
