We had 5 chicks hatch. #5 hatched ~20 hours ago, and is smaller and weak. It prefers to lay down. It can move around, with poor balance. It can be loud. I also found #5 laying on its back.

The other chicks (at most a day older), are running around, drinking and eating.

After reading some threads, I put its beak in the water; maybe it drank. I put some feed on a large wood chip and it pecked once or twice.

With a syringe, we dripped some water/feed mix onto its mouth, which it opened.
We put it down in the brooder and it pooped. At first green and clear liquid came out, followed by thick milky white liquid.

Does anyone have a link to an article that describes behavior and poop, etc, and/or give some insight?

Thanks!!

Laying on his back could be from a neurological disorder or vitamin deficiency. Offer him some poultry vitamins like Poultry Nutri-Drench or Poultry Cell to see if there is any improvement.

Getting him hydrated is most important so continue to try to encourage him to drink. Wet feed after he is drinking is a good idea too.

Green poop can be a number of things - nutritional, bacterial infection, illness or worms are usually the most common causes. Since your chick is so young, I would focus on nutritional or possibly bacterial infection.

Let us know how he's doing.

Hydration and some food seem to be working. I was not able to get a vitamin solution, so fed a mix of water and chick food. The chick food states it has vitamins - probably not the same amount. Probably the hydration and time was all that was needed.

The chick is no longer falling on its back unable to get up, and it is running around with the others. It is not chirping loudly any more - don't know if that means anything. Seems to groom more than the others. And, on the second day, the chick is eating with the others. Still smaller, but behavior seems better.

I don't see it drinking but don't see the others drinking much either. So not sure on that.

The sickly one is the one in the middle of the trio in the background.

Thanks for the consultation!

I'm glad to hear she is improving
