I have 4 hens that I've raised from chicks for 3 years. They have always put themselves to bed at night. All of the sudden they won't lay their eggs in the coop.. they've gone under the porch the past 2 days. Tonight they weren't in the coop when I went to close the door. They were all over in the trees. They free range during the day but have ALWAYS gone inside for bed. Can anyone give me some insight on what's going on?!

Welcome to BYC!
Have you checked the birds *and* the coop for signs of lice, mites, etc? Have you closely inspected the inside of the coop to see if you can detect any evidence of recent incursion by an uninvited guest (droppings, fur, etc)? Do you have a run that can be used to confine them near the coop for a few days vs. allowing them to range?

Again, with the others.

Time to check the coop REAL CLOSE. Be carry a hoe, shovel....
Something in there the chickens don't like.

HINT : check overhead first. Top of rafters and such. And be wearing
good boots.

Welcome!

At the risk of sounding like an echo .. I agree that something has spooked them or is spooking them.

Please do let us know if you figure out what it is.

Agree with the others something is bothering them in the coop. They can't tell you, so hiding in trees (they think) is best - except owl, raccoons, etc. can also be in the trees..
