Chick Dead In Shell, But in a Weird Way...

So I had this chick that was one of the last ones to hatch and it had zipped about an inch so far but to me it looked like it was kind of stuck where it was because no matter how much it moved it's head, it never came into contact with the shell. I decided to wait until morning to help it but when I checked the next morning, it was dead, but with a twist. It was covered in yolk, like it looked like the yolk had burst and it died right there. It hadn't made any progress, it was just still there, covered in the yolk, and dead. Anyone know what happened? Could it have pushed so hard it burst the yolk that hadn't been absorbed?

Ah...that's a shame. Poor chick got so close to hatching!

It sounds like it may have kicked through the unabsorbed yolk during its struggles to get positioned properly and emerge. If there was that much yolk left, it was probably some time away from actual hatch.

It ruptured the yolk. Ruptured yolks, especially if the yolk is a large amount, doesn't have good survival chances. I had one a year ago that for some reason decided to hatch before it was ready. The vascular system between chick and egg was still active and yolk was ruptured. I'm not sure if the yolk ruptured in the hatch attempt or if it hatched early because the yolk ruptured. Needless to say it only lasted a couple hours after it hatched.
