Last night my 12 year old forgot to lock the coop up. Four of 5 girls have been accounted for. "Sweet Pea" is missing, she is a year old, healthy RIR. She is/was our largest bird, dominate and spunky. She was the first to stand her ground with our Doberman puppy/adolescent. She would always be the first to come running when BigBirdRick would call. Our coop is within 50' of our house and the girls free range from 2:00pm until roosting time. We also have a dog that is free roaming as well but, sleeps indoors at night. There is always a flourish of activity around or home that usually keeps predators away.

Onto the pic. After it was discovered that the girls were not safely locked up. It was 7:20 this morning, right before I drive our daughters to school, that my 12 year old Brooke discovered the small pile of feathers as shown. The pile is less than 10' away from our house. It appears to be molting feathers to my novice chicken raising eyes. There are no footy prints other than our dog (large dog) and tracks from one of our four wheelers. No blood and no larger feathers. No Sweet Pea to be found as of yet. I am kidding myself that she might have just wandered off to far this morning and is enjoying one of the neighbors new floor beds.

Anyways thoughts???

No trying to scare you but by the looks of it. I think something had her off. Maybe a fox. The feathers could be where's she tried flapping away or the predator has pulled at her and just got a load of feathers hopefully she got away with nothing but a few feathers missing x

Thank you for the replies. Sweet Pea has been missing for well over 16 hours. We hope that she went as painless as possible. My daughter's understand the risks, and food line order. Simple mistake, wow "life/death" happens in short order.

Since Sweet Pea was more or less the largest of of our small flock, and again most dominate, I wonder if she may have sacrificed herself to protect her "sisters". Sweet Pea is the second of our flock to meet an early demise. So sad.... Quite a few tears were bled tonight.

RIP Sweet Pea. We thought we were going to loose you early as a sickly hatching. You had beaten the odds. Made friends with the entire family flock, and became Big Bird Rick's favie. I will cherish the butt rubs and our talks every morning after breakfast. I am so sorry to let you down.
