Just like the title says. I was wondering what things I can put in my chicks water. We are getting our first time chicks on May,17,2017. I know you can get powder for they water but if you know of something other then the powder We love to hear it. I read that you can put organic apple vinegar. Oh on side note we want our chick to be as organic as we can. Thank you again.

The vitamin with electrolyte powder I use for first few days after hatching. People also use it with shipped chicks. Basically hatching and shipment of chicks takes a lot out of them. What they need is to eat to gain strength. That's what the vitamin with electrolytes does, gives them an energy boost so they do eat and regain strength. It's a preventative measure. If a chick is too week to feed then it wastes away very quickly.

There is no need to put anything in the water but I do recommend mixing up a packet of the vit. with electro. if your chicks are coming to you in the mail. If your getting them at a local feed store then there's nothing they need. Just pick out the most active ones to buy.

Some folks use cider vinegar with mother. There are threads here claiming all sorts of benefits. It should NOT be used on a daily basis and the only reason people say organic is in that form it always has the "mother" in it. That's what's important if used is the vinegar still has the mother. Heinz makes cider vinegar with mother that is reasonably priced. The other goto somewhat reasonable brand is Bragg's that happens to be organic.

Think of vinegar or any other water addative as a tonic and not a sole drinking supply. Use sparingly. For instance vitamins with electrolytes we use for the hottest times of summer. In the heat animals don't feed as much just like us. Few electrolytes and they'll consume a bit more to stay healthy. The feed is what's most important. And there is nothing better for you than pure water on a daily basis.

I'm getting my chick from the local feed store they getting mailed to the on the May,15 and they be at the store May, 17 or so and I can pick them up then. So they will be 3 or 4 days old when I get them. So you think the powdered vitamins would be best just not on a daily basis but defiantly for the first few days? I would like to give them treats when i hold and pet them, any treats you recommend for day old to week old chicks? What would you recommend for a toy for chicks and chickens? any tips for anything? We want to keep them happy and keep there little brains working. Thank you for your response to our post.

I highly recommend probiotic powder, vitamin powder and electrolyte powder. I have raised the all natural everything kind of chicks, and believe me, you are better off listening to the experts at the dept of agriculture. I would not experiment with anything unfounded. They are delicate.

so I get all 3 probiotic powder, vitamin powder and electrolyte powder? or is there a all in one? how long do I give this to them all they live?

At your feed store they will have a packets of vitamin with electrolytes. You'll see them in strips of three packets like you would see yeast packets sold. Take one packer or the entire strip of three. It has vitamins AND electrolytes in it that you mix with a gallon of pure water. Use this for first few days until that gallon is done then give them only pure water. Probiotics are what your getting from vinegar with Mother. If you really want all three then add a teaspoon of vinegar to that first gallon of water too. It's not needed but the vit with electro powder is a good thing to boost energy and get the newly hatched, shipped chicks to start eating right away. As stated before the feed is what's most important and nothing beats pure clean water to drink. Change out dirty water for clean everyday.

Here is what I'm talking about or similar product. Packets of three, this one is called Sav-a-Chick, about all your feed stores will have this or similar product and I've purchased one at a time before:
As for probiotic, vinegar with mother, I don't even know the dosage- might be tablespoon to gallon. There are several threads on the subject. It's a tonic not constant drink. Clean water is all you need excepting few times of a "tonic" now and then for a reason.
