Do your chickens eat worms??

I started up a worm bin to have a source of protein for them in the winter. None of them will eat the worms!! What is it with these bird brains? Don't they know they are supposed to love worms?
Only one of them would eat them, but he was one of the roos I sent to freezer camp. He would slurp them down. If the neighbors could have endured his crowing I would have kept him around to teach the ladies to eat them.
I have offered them to the hens for months and they refuse them. Even when I keep them shut up in the coop with only their layer food.
I gave up on the worms. They went to freezer camp as well. I dumped them out in my garden last week.
 
Mine seem to eat everything! They eat all kinds of bugs and beetles, worms, grubs, small snakes, and I've even seen them eat baby mice that they found after we tilled the garden. We have large breeds, not bantams - don't know if that makes a difference or not. Maybe my birds are just carnivores!

I guess you could always use the worms for fishing....

We go to Wally World every once in a great while and pick up a few containers of bait worms.

We find a "group" of chickens in the yard and start throwing them the worms.

Now, if you are really bored and want some down home farm entertainment, this is it.

Try it sometime and you will find out what I am talkin about. It is a game of keep away !!

Do not get too many of the chickens envolved, a dozen would be plenty as they will start fighting too much if there are too many of them.
 
Worms aren't a natural choice for chickens for protein - and they are also a source of internal parasitic worms. So I would go light on the worms. My chickens don't seem to know what to do with them, either. That should tell you something. If a chicken won't eat them, there must be a good reason.
 
My husband laughs at me...

My chickens (Brahmas) LOVE bugs. I hand-picked slugs, snails, grubs, and worms for my beauties during the warmer months. The chickens would line up at the fence and wait for me to toss in their goodies, then fight over the fat, juicy, slimy ickys.

I kept putting newspaper under rail ties to entice the night crawlers, and raiding my compost piles for bugs, worms, and grubs. Oh--and shaking Japanes beetles off the plants and into a bucket--oohh what a treat!

I toyed with the idea of a worm bin for winter treats, but really had no idea how to go about it. Any pointer appreciated!

get a rubbermaid or sterlite bin with a cover drill holes in and around bin including the bottom put a peice of cardboard in bottom add newpaper strips moisten then add some soil and worms and table scraps like onion,potatoe and carrot peels and cover use an extra cover for under the bin to catch drippings... go to www.gardengirltv on you tube she has complete directions...

only red wiggly worms will do...makes great compost...
