Guard Geese? - Page 3

[[[.......Are geese as good as ganders at guarding?......]]]]]

No.

The ganders are the warriors and the geese allow them to do the protecting.  Unless you get too near her nest, and then she is pretty serious about making you back off.

I'm hoping to get a pair of Toulouse geese for my flock guardians.  Oh, and because I really like the way they look and I fell in love with a tub of goslings at the feed store.  Didn't buy any, but I am going to get a pair either from a hatchery or from a local breeder.

Buncha Outdoor PET chickens, ducks, two Toulouse ganders, and four turkeys. Plus 2 wiener dogs, some bunnies and a rescue cat which owns me. Oh. And a house silkie....

Geese won't guard your chickens.  They will set up an alarm if there is trouble, so you can run out there and protect your chickens.

Geese are not big enough or tough enough to defeat any type of predator and all that happens is your geese will be killed, too.

wow i am shocked at this thread most domestic goose breeds will be eaten alive sorry but true, people really considering the smaller more quiet goose breeds? like pilgram? sure make it more easy picking for the predator..  IN domestic bird world the bigger meaner more aggressive loud ones have the best chance since none of them fly!  Pilgram worst choice ever.

giant canada geese i have seen over and over from my window beating the crap out of coons and foxes but they are more powerfully built than domestic geese and much better fighters

Yep. Same goes for turkey Toms, as well.  A tom might try to fend off a predator, but unless its something very small and undetermined, the Tom will be killed.  Also, turkeys don't always get on well with chickens and other birds.

Geese are just noisy birds that pinch you really hard with their beaks, and maybe flog you... Predators have teeth and they mean business.  Geese are not good livestock gaurdian choices.

I have the best geese for guard geese. the meter reader had his pepper spray out ready to mace them as he didn't know how to deal with them. he asked if it would hurt them? I said they'd probably like it and come for more.

the largest most aggressive geese can easily take care of foxes, minks, hawks, possems(which are a joke), weasels small predators but not coyotes bobcats or dogs or really big boar coons

i agree tho geese might just defend their offspring or themselves they wont risk their lives to defend a chicken? a good dog is going to run past everything and try to kill a fox or a coyote or another dog that dares mess with His flock but geese or other birds will just kinda attack what gets in their way or space, same with cats.

A pair of fox working together can readily overpower the largest most aggressive gander.  During the day a gander might stand a chance against the smaller predators, but in the dark they become fair game.
