Emergency....chicken feathers and skin pulled apart......

I once had a hen that literally had her skull exposed and skin was hanging down around her neck. The vet was closed and they don't take chickens anyway so I ran to the farm store and bought betadine and the drug store for some anbesol type tooth numbing stuff. I know it sounds really odd, but that's all I could think of to numb her while I stitched her up. Had to stitch all the way across the top of her head. She was about 7 years old then, and lived another 7.

I am going to be taking care of her wound soon and what I really need to know most of all if anyone can answer is this:

Do I clean the old ointment off and wash out the wound or just reapply more ointment and redress?

If you got the betadine or iodine you should dilute it with warm water and then squirt it onto the wound to clean it. You can also make a saline solution with warm water and use that to clean it. Use the saline solution about twice a day for a couple of days and then you can do it once a day for a while. If you chicken is continuing to peck at the wound, by all means keep redressing it. You will want to look for puss as that is a sign of infection. Regular cleaning with saline solution is a simple yet effective remedy. Make sure you dry your bird well after the rinse.
Years ago I had a chicken that had a three inch round portion of her butt eaten off by "something", by the time I discovered it, the area was covered in maggots. I washed out the maggots and kept cleaning her. I kept her in the house in a special cage, warm and safe. She recovered completely, feathers and all. It is truly amazing what chickens can recover from.

I was going to start a post, but this pretty much answers my question!!! My GLW is now a naked neck!!! I'm thinking they are bored, I have been keeping them in the coop and run and they must be stir crazy!!! Since they all avoid the snow like the plague and my whole yard is snow, I just haven't bothered to open the gate! Today there is a little ground exposed, and the sun is shining, the door is open...meanwhile what are my options for the naked neck? There doesn't seem to be a wound, just loss of feathers..

Cheryl, the feathers will grow back.
You might want to give your bored hens something to do while locked up. I give my hens grains that have not been removed from the plant, i.e. millet, broomcorn, even corn on the cob. They have to work at getting the goodies. This might help a bit.

So, I know this thread is many years old, but I discovered my 2 month old chick today at home with a large 4 inch patch of skin and feathers missing on her back side. There were so many maggots! But, she is still alive. I cleaned the area and almost bathed her in hydrogen peroxide to try to kill the maggots, but they just seem to keep coming out. Is there something else I should put on it? Or is it a lost cause? The poor girl was so tired and just layed there with her eyes closed. I'm not really sure what to do....
