Chickens are not mean. If you spend time with them everyday they will not bother you. Start spending time with your chickens and you will find they can be friendly,,,just like any other pet. You stop spending time with them and then they dont know who you are.
I had some hens who I spent HOURS with. Some days It was 30 mins at at time, holding, feeding, cuddling, other days it was 1 hour doing the same thing, every day. It didn't matter to them. They bit me and tried to chase me around the yard in order to fly up and bite me every chance they got. We hand raised them, carried them around, let them sleep on us when they were chicks but as soon as they hit the 3 month mark, they got real mean and tried to bit me evry chance they got. With a 5 year old at home, we had to rehome them because I was scared of them going after her. I tried every trick I could find to become the alpha hen/roo but they didn't respond at all, so finding them a new home was the next best thing to cooking them.
