Does anyone know of any safe/non-toxic weed killers we can use on our backyard patio? We're doing an open house in a few weeks with the real estate agency and we need those weeds gone.

Or if there aren't any products that would do it, are there any home products we can use? I've heard of people using vinegar or ammonia or even bleach but I am not sure what to use, especially what also wouldn't ruin the patio stones.

Thanks,
-Anna

There is a kind of torch for this kind of thing. I'm not sure what it uses as fuel but it burns the weeds and no chemicals for the birds to ingest. I've only seen it but never really looked at it.

We use straight white vinegar poured onto the weeds first thing in the morning. Kills them within 24-48hours. Give it a shot. It won't hurt the patio stones, your pets or chickens if they decide to eat on the weeds, unlike bleach or ammonia. It does however change the PH of the soil in the area treated. Do a test area to see if it will work on your type of weeds, the most you would be out is a couple of dollars for a gallon of vinegar from Wal-mart.

good topic, i am going to try the vinegar tomorrow.

Vinegar works well, just doesn't always get the roots, and on some tough weeds it might take a couple applications. It works best on a hot sunny day. Good luck

Ummm...Why not just let the chickens out there for awhile each day. That is one of the purposes of a chicken, to keep the yard free from weeds

Be careful of torching weeds on brick or stone patios as sometimes you can leave soot/scorch marks that don't come off easily. At least, practice your technique in an inconspicuous spot first.

Agricultural vinegar works well (pickling vinegar from grocery store, 7%, works ok too if you can get it, and is cheaper than the stuff sold in the homeowner-sized herbicide bottles).

Or boiling water, just be careful of your feeties.

Or you could just grub the weeds out of the cracks with a linoleum knife.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat
