Broken Eggs

My 2 BLS's are about 2 1/2 and aside of a 6 week laps in laying (molting) they are good producers of 2.5 0z. eggs . That being said last week I found one egg with a hole at the pointy end, today I found one smashed in the nesting box and one with a hole in the pointy end. I have hay in the box but they push it aside and lay on the wood floor...and have for 2 years. My coop is made of hardware cloth on all sides and the floor , therefore no animals can get in. So it has to be one of the "girls". If it happens tomorrow..........fried chicken.

getting broken eggs on the bottom of the coop recently, not eaten just broken like it fell under their roost not under the nesting box?? The chickens are 2 years old and have been doing fine. Find some eggs in the yard now and then also, thin shells sometimes.

I know this thread is pretty old but I just started having the same problem. I collected 7 eggs today (from 11 hens) and 3 were broken and looked like the shells had been fragile, certainly they were lighter in color. This has been happening for about 10 days. And they are laid in the nesting boxes or up in the coop, sometimes on the floor of the coop. Everyday, at least one broken. I have fake eggs in the boxes, which they love to kick out. I'm really beginning to think they are eating too much of the food scraps I throw out and not enough feed. My husband won't be happy with this conclusion as he loves to get rid of our food scraps in an economical way, but it really isn't if they are affecting our egg production. If anyone else has another idea, let me know.

Make sure treats and left overs will be less than 10% of their diet and have oyster shell available for their calcium, might help might not
