Here is a good definition of what Americana is:
Americana- refers to the culture, history and heritage of the United States. Americana is anything that captures the essence of America's values, experiences and collective identity. Symbols of Americana are readily and easily associated with the United States and are likely to evoke feelings of nostalgia for past days of American innocence.(from wikipedia)
Here are some examples of Americana:
Ameraucana
The Ameraucana is an American breed of chicken which is a descendant of a South American breed named the Quecheua. The region of Chile where the parent stock of the Quecheua comes from is inhabited by Araucana Indians:
However another American breed of chickens has similar roots. The Araucana was bred from Colloncas and Quetero chickens which come from the same region. In South aAmerica the Araucana is called the Araucana de Aretes maeaning "araucana with earings". Both the Araucana and Ameraucana have roots in South Smerica, however in the US, those who bred rumpless and tufted birds chose to name their breed first. They named it the Araucana. And so the tailed, muffed, bearded breeders decided to call their breed the American Araucana, but that was a mouthful and so they settled on using a portmanteau.
Portmanteau-a word or morpheme whose form and meaning are derived from a blending of two or more distinct forms (as smog from smoke and fog). "Portmanteau word" is used to describe a linguistic blend, namely "a word formed by blending sounds from two or more distinct words and combining their meanings.
The word portmanteau was invented by Lewis Carrol the author of "Alice in Wonderland" when he was writing his book "through the looking glass" He used many portmanteaus in the poem "the Jaberwocky"
ANYHOO back on the subject.....the breeders of the American Araucana shortened the name of their breed to Amer aucana.
Here are some examples of Ameraucanas:
The 2 things are not even remotely the same. Americana is a symbol of American culture, but the Ameraucana might even be considered a symbol of Chilean culture. Either way, I hope this dispels some confusion.
