Barred Rock laying age

My 5 BR hens did not lay until 24-26 weeks.
They showed all the signs for a month but held out on the eggs

Red faces, squatting, in and out of the nest boxes, deep clucking.....

Also, you really should consider getting more hens for your rooster.
3:1 is not a good ratio and your hens will be worn out. Not a good situation. Rule of thumb is 10-12 hens per rooster.
Best wishes!

I have a couple of pens with 2 females and 1 male. For my breeding pens I prefer to have 5 or 6 females and 1 male. I have some pens with multiple males and females. The males have been together their whole life and the coops and pens are rather large so there is a lot of room for them. My personal opinion is what ever works for you. It is true that the more females the fertility rate may go down and most males do have their favorite females regardless of how many females there are in with them. One way to solve the problem of the males giving the females a bare back is to rotate them if you have multiple coops and pens and also you can use chicken saddles on the females. Good luck and have fun...

I went out to move some birds but it is so hot out. The thermometer says 100 for the outside temperature. I had a gate that needed to be repaired so I did that instead and put the sprinklers on for the birds. Some of them will stand in the cool water under the sprinklers. I opened the gates so some of the birds could come out into the pasture but they aren't. There is more shade in their pens so they aren't coming out.

I have two. One started at 16 wks, the other at 20.
no way were they laying at 16 and probably not at 20 either might want to check math or other birds in coop. they have barely developed a comb and wattles by this point unless they are a cockerel. First they develop comb and wattles then they will swell and turn bright red. I have raised nearly 100 Barred Rocks over the last few years and they will reach POL around 25-30 weeks at the earliest. Most layers reach 6 months b4 they are at POL(point of lay) 6 months=24-26 weeks

Hi,

I know that the average age that hens start to lay is 20 -24 weeks, but I also know that some breeds lay at earlier, some later, some right in the middle, etc.

What has your experience been with Barred Rocks. Are they early layers?

Thanks.
I bought four barred rocks in april and and four ISA browns at the very end of april. Since ISA browns are layers they started laying at 20 weeks and that was before my barred rocks. My barred rocks started laying about the second week of august so at about 26 weeks
