When do chicks voices change?

I'm a real newbie to chickens, and all my priors have been adults (or at least really close) at purchase. About 4 weeks back, I got myself 7 of EE pullets - (cuties!) about 12 weeks old the (unreliable) source said.

Well, I've been enjoying watching the ladies grow -- since I've never been around chicks before, every new thing they do is exciting.

Well, yesterday, I picked one of them up and she made that adult chicken "chortle" instead of the "cheep cheep" baby sound they all usually make. Up until then, they all have pretty much sounded exactly like newborn chicks! And I went ahead and picked up another - same thing! She sounded like an adult!!!

So my question is, what does this mean? At what age do their voices start to change? Is this any indication of how long until the ladies start laying?

My chicks' voices started to change at about 17 or 18 weeks old. Their voices changed from the "peep-peep-peep" to "peep-peep-bwwwaaaaak" with some various clucks. Sometimes the bwwwaaak is really drawn out it, and it sounds like the girls have been smoking too many cigarettes.

The first one started to lay at 19 weeks old, and the others will follow soon.

The other change I noticed along with the voice change: the combs, wattles & area around the eyes started to get really red.

Good luck and enjoy your chicks!

All my pullets made the chirp to cluck transition around 11-12 weeks. I doubt that it's a clear indication of when they will start laying, but rather just a sign that they're entering adolescence. Oh, how they grow up so fast...

Thank you for your replies! I do enjoy watching them grow... they get big so fast!

My girls are still peeping mostly but I too have heard that funny chortle like sound. Especially, when the outdoor cat I feed (Mutant 6 toed Earl) takes a peek at them - he can't get to them but he would like to. - I squirt him whenever he comes near the coop for a looksee. The girls have wisened up and move away from the wire to the ends or the middle of the coop.

it is rather funny when one does the brawwk and the others are still peeping. it is almost like.. what was that noise? i didn't do it. she did it.. and all go quiet trying to figure out where it came from.. even the one who did it...kinda like a poot in a group of people lol

Mine 11-12weeks old and within the last week they have all pretty much started the BOK BOK BOKKING...

I mighta had something to do with it though cause I used to go in there and try and talk chicken to them....

Nothing like watching a 6ft 190lb guy going "bok bok bwhahkk" to his chickens....at least that is what the wifey tells me.
