I'm a real newbie to chickens, and all my priors have been adults (or at least really close) at purchase. About 4 weeks back, I got myself 7 of EE pullets - (cuties!) about 12 weeks old the (unreliable) source said.
Well, I've been enjoying watching the ladies grow -- since I've never been around chicks before, every new thing they do is exciting.
Well, yesterday, I picked one of them up and she made that adult chicken "chortle" instead of the "cheep cheep" baby sound they all usually make. Up until then, they all have pretty much sounded exactly like newborn chicks! And I went ahead and picked up another - same thing! She sounded like an adult!!!
So my question is, what does this mean? At what age do their voices start to change? Is this any indication of how long until the ladies start laying?
